Walk past a shop window or scroll down an online store page, the likelihood of you stopping is greater when you see some of kind of discount. As human beings we love the concept of getting a better deal. Science has even shown that the part of our brain that registers pain reacts more positively and releases a certain chemical when we purchase something that is affordable or unexpectedly cheaper. Consumers have also been conditioned into expecting seasonal offers and discounts while online shoppers look to specific shopping days such as “Black Monday” to steal a bargain.

While for some bargain hunting forms a pastime, for many households it is a necessity. Last year in the UK, the Office for National Statistics revealed living costs for the bottom 10 per cent of households had increased by 2.7 per cent over the previous 12 years, compared to 2.3 per cent for the richest tenth.
